1. Can you recommend some effective biological control for teak defoliator and leaf skeletonizer?
  Release of Tricjogramma raoi @ 1.25 lakh/ha found effective in minimizing at least 50% damage impact caused by teak defoliator and leaf skeletonizer. Bacillus thuringiensis, B.t. @ 1g/litre of water ia also very effective in inducing larbal mortality in same defoliator.
2. Can you suggest some Integrated Pest Management for defoliator of Deodar tree (Cedrus Deodara)?
  Biological resistance against Deodar defoliator may be increased by maintaining adequate planting stock of deodar through plantation programme, and controlling the excessive grazing, lopping and illicit felling of trees. Heavy larval and pupal predation by adult of Calosoma beesoni is the major biological control which helps in managing the pest in field.

1. How can I learn agroforestry based techniques developed by ICFRE?
  ICFRE has established Van Vigyan Kendras (VVKs) in each state/ UT. These VVKs provide one week training on land use based agroforestry techniques for a group of about 20 persons including farmers for each state.

3. What would you recommend to increase the yield of my maize and bajra crop?
  By applying VAM inoculum (biofertilizer) developed by AFRI, Jodhpur, you can enhance the yield of your Maize and Bajra crop 40-50%.
4. How much price Casuarina poles are fetching in the market?
  The approximate cost of Casurina poles in the market varies between Rs. 8000 to 20000 per 100 pieces for the mid grith 21-30 cm and for mid girth 31-45 cm, it range between Rs. 8000 to 30000 per 100 pieces.

1. How could you help us in selecting appropriate termite resistance timber for industrial use?
  We have developed a new technique named ‘accelerated wood testing against termite’ for testing different species for their resistance against termites. Through this technique we can suggest you appropriate timber.
2. Which adhesives have been developed by FRI for pasting veneers for plywood?
  Various types of adhesives for wood assembly work and plywood have been evolved from proteins of seed cakes, leaf proteins, aqueous alcoholic extracts of cereal meals, urea formaldehyde condensates, tar acids, cashew shell oil etc.
3. What preservative can I use to enhance the durability of teak timber?
  Wood Preservation branch of FRI has developed an efficient water soluble preservative known as ASCU (Greensalts in U.S.A.). This preservative will enhance the durability of teak timber.
4. Can I also preserve non durable and plantation grown wood?
  With the help of wood preservative ‘Copper Lignin Complex A and B’ you can preserve non durable and plantation grown wood.

1. How could I identify bamboo species easily?
  You can consult a key developed by FRI to identify almost all the species of bamboo on the basis of their culm sheath and young shoots without recourse to rare flowering material.
2. Can I get meteorological data of Dehradun of last three years i.e.2009-2012 for my research work?
  Forest Ecology and Environment division of FRI is maintaining the forest meteorological observatory approved by IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) since 1958. You can get the required meteorological data from there.
3. How could I establish plantation in arid areas?
  Arid Forest Research Institute, Jodhpur has developed micro-catchments structures such as ring pits, big saucers and trench cum mound structures for the establishment of plantations in arid regions. You may contact Director, AFRI, Jodhpur for details.

1. How could I get flowering plants from FRI Nursery?
  You can directly go to central nursery of FRI and purchase the ornamental plants at optimum price.
2. Can I obtain seeds of some medicinal plant species from your nursery?
  Non Wood Forest Product Division of Forest Research Institute deals with the various species of medicinal plants and stores the important plant parts of medicinal value such as seeds, leaves, barks, roots etc. so you can contact them for the seeds of required medicinal plant.
3. Can I get some natural dyes for dying woollen shawls?
  Chemistry Division of FRI is working on Extraction of Natural dyes to reduce the use of synthetic products as colouring material. You can consult the chemistry division for required natural colour for dying.
